May 2nd, 2014 – Avian Friday: Snow Geese

Duck, Geese, and Swans has been the theme over the past several posts so might as well keep it going this week. The Skagit Valley area is where thousands of Snow Geese congregate during their winter migration. One of my favorite places to photograph birds and just hang out in nature is at a place called Fir Island. It is in the delta adjacent the Skagit River empties out into saltwater estuary of Skagit Bay. During one of my first encounters photographing the Snow Geese there, I was out along the shoreline of the bay towards the end of the day. A huge flock of hundreds of the Geese flew directly overhead on their way across the Bay to retire for the evening.
